Burnham Signals ‘Big Decisions’ on Fairer Council Tax Reform

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said his government faces “big decisions” on reforming the council tax system to make it fairer across the country.

Speaking in a BBC interview, Burnham argued that the current system is unfair because some households in Greater Manchester pay higher council tax than owners of much more expensive properties in London. He said the problem stems from property tax bands not being updated for many years.

Burnham praised former Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ efforts to introduce reforms aimed at making the system fairer, including higher charges for the most valuable homes. However, he stressed that any future changes must remain consistent with Labour’s 2024 election manifesto.

Reports suggest the government is considering wider reforms, including replacing council tax and stamp duty with a new property tax system, although no final decisions have been made.
