UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he is prepared to publicly disagree with US President Donald Trump if it is necessary to protect Britain’s national interests.
In his first major broadcast interview since taking office, Burnham said he could not promise to agree with Trump on every issue, stressing that his primary responsibility is to act in the best interests of the UK.
The prime minister revealed that his first phone call with Trump after entering Downing Street was positive, but acknowledged that differences could emerge on major foreign policy issues, including Iran. Burnham reaffirmed the UK’s position of not supporting US offensive military operations against Iran.
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also said the UK should maintain an honest relationship with Washington, arguing that the Trump administration values allies who are willing to express disagreements when necessary rather than simply agreeing with everything.
Burnham also ruled out calling an early general election, saying the government is focused on delivering the promises made to voters. He added that ensuring the UK’s defence investment plans are fully funded remains a key priority ahead of the next Budget.
