BNP urges govt to implement July Charter’s agreed upon issues

In a statement issued after its Standing Committee meeting last night, the party also urged the government to take sincere and effective measures to hold the upcoming national elections on time.

The meeting of the BNP’s highest policymaking body was held at the party chairperson’s Gulshan office, with acting chairman Tarique Rahman presiding virtually from London.

“Under no circumstances should new questions or crises be created to obstruct the upcoming election, which is aimed at restoring democracy,” BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a press release following the meeting.

Fakhrul said that after extensive discussions in the National Consensus Commission, several issues — including some with notes of dissent — were agreed upon and signed on October 17.

He added that BNP firmly believes all political parties will remain united in implementing the agreed upon issues from the consensus discussions.

“BNP, with the support of democracy-loving people, will resist any attempts to create new controversies or obstacles in implementing the unanimously adopted July National Charter,” the statement read.

Fakhrul further said the party would continue to honour the sacrifices of martyrs and the injured from the 16-year-long struggle for democracy and the 2024 July–August mass uprising.
