Trump says US “not satisfied” with Iran deal as tensions continue

US President Donald Trump has said he is “not satisfied” with the terms of a potential nuclear deal currently being negotiated with Iran.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting in Washington, Trump said Iran appeared “very much intent” on reaching an agreement but added that talks have not yet reached a final stage.

“They just want to make a deal,” he said. “So far, they haven’t gotten there and we’re not satisfied.”

His comments come amid mixed signals from both sides over the progress of negotiations. Iranian state media recently reported details of a draft agreement, including claims about reopening the Strait of Hormuz and US military withdrawal from the region. The White House dismissed the report as a “complete fabrication”.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there had been “some progress and some interest” in talks, but did not provide details on remaining disputes.

Earlier reports had suggested momentum towards a deal, but officials from both Washington and Tehran have since cautioned that an agreement is not imminent.

The negotiations come against a backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, following recent strikes and counter-strikes involving the US, Iran and Israel.
