Xi Jinping hosted a high-profile welcome ceremony for former US President Donald Trump at the start of a diplomatic visit aimed at easing tensions between the two global powers, though major disagreements remain unresolved.
Trump was greeted with full military honours outside China’s Great Hall of the People, including a gun salute, a band playing the US national anthem, and a formal reception led by Xi. Schoolchildren waving Chinese and American flags also welcomed the US delegation.
During the visit, Trump appeared relaxed and complimentary toward his host, telling Xi he was a “great leader” and describing China as “beautiful” during a tour of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. He also called the talks a “cherished opportunity” at a state banquet.
The tone of the visit marked a contrast to Trump’s earlier rhetoric on China, where he previously accused Beijing of unfair trade practices and described Covid-19 in strongly critical terms during his presidency.
Despite the ceremonial warmth, significant geopolitical and economic tensions remain at the centre of the talks.
Key issues include ongoing trade disputes between the two countries, with tariffs previously reaching extremely high levels during the trade war before a fragile truce reduced them. Questions remain over whether that truce will hold or evolve into a broader economic agreement.
Another major topic is the global impact of tensions involving Iran, with the United States seeking potential Chinese assistance in encouraging diplomatic progress and stabilising shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global energy supply.
China, however, is expected to use its influence as leverage in negotiations, particularly on sensitive issues such as Taiwan, which Beijing views as part of its territory but which remains a self-governed US ally.
The visit also included a large business delegation featuring senior executives from major global companies, reflecting a focus on economic cooperation and investment opportunities between the two countries.
While both sides signalled openness to improving relations, no detailed agreement was announced following the initial round of talks. Officials said discussions focused on expanding economic cooperation and maintaining stability in global trade and energy markets.
Analysts note that China continues to position itself as a key global economic power, while the United States seeks to protect strategic interests amid shifting global dynamics.
Further discussions between Trump and Xi are expected, with both sides signalling cautious optimism but no clear resolution yet on major issues such as trade, Iran, or Taiwan.
